Children enjoying the assault course at Fort Nelson

About

An action-packed summer of fun awaits visitors to Fort Nelson, as the ever-popular assault course returns to the Victorian fort.

Little adventurers will love the playing on the assault course with its obstacles and challenges. It's suitable for ages 4-10 years and tickets cost £3.50 on the door. The assault course will be open daily from Tuesday 22 July to Tuesday 2 September, from 10.30am to 4.30pm. It will also be open on two weekends just before the summer holidays (5-6 and 11-13 July).

As well as the assault course there will be a free museum trail available throughout the summer. Children can search for and learn about heroic animals that were awarded special medals for their service in conflicts and war.

Fort Nelson will also host ‘The Lucky Ones Grow Old’ portrait exhibition; on loan from The D-Day Story in Portsmouth until September. The free exhibition, in the Fort’s Artillery Hall, features nine stunning portraits of veterans, by photographer Matt Sills, who took the images for The D-Day Story during the 80th anniversary year of the Normandy landings.

As a national museum, admission to Fort Nelson is free but visitors are asked to pre-book their tickets online in advance at https://bit.ly/440Vesi as the site has capacity limits in place, and the school summer holidays are always a busy time at the Fort.

A fun day out awaits at the Victorian fort, where families can explore its tunnel, ramparts, and outdoor space, as well as a museum of treasures ready to discover.

The Fort is home to the Royal Armouries' national collection of artillery and historic cannon, and houses museum galleries displaying 700 pieces from across the globe.

There are lots of picnic benches around the site, and the café and refreshment kiosk will be open every day for light meals, snacks and drinks.
