Though football may be the city’s first love, Portsmouth is carving out a niche as a home for great tennis. Recent years have seen some of the world’s top female players head to Southsea for a warm-up tournament to get them fighting fit for Wimbledon. These same grass courts are available year-round for pay-to-pay.
Elsewhere there are hard courts on Southsea Common and a number of tennis centres offering indoor facilities – so you can still play whatever the weather. What’s more, with many places offering hire services as well, you don’t even need to pack your gear if you’d rather travel light.
