Portsmouth has been referred to as Britain’s “most fortified city”. Its location on the south coast made Portsmouth a frontier for kings and admirals defending Britain from foreign powers - and also liable to attack, meaning that protections were needed. Though any such dangers have long since receded, our fortifications still stand to this day – and are perfect for exploring.
