About
The Galleon Andalucia - a faithful replica of a Spanish galleon from the seventeenth century - visits Portsmouth from 31 July to 3 August. Docked at Gunwharf Quays Marina, the ship will be open to the public from 10am to 8.30pm each day.
Spanish galleons such as these sailed the commercial and cultural routes which, for more than three centuries (XVI-XVIII), linked Spain with America and the Philippines through the so-called fleets of the Indies. It was the longest sea route both in geography and duration within the history of navigation.
The Galleon Andalucia was built by the Nao Victoria Foundation between 2009 and 2010 in the shipyards of Punta Umbría (Huelva), under the design and direction of Ignacio Fernández Vial. It launched on November 30, 2010. Between 2010 and 2016 the ship has sailed more than 48,000 nautical miles through the great oceans and seas of the world, calling at ports on four continents of the planet, all the while participating in various cultural projects. It has sailed the Pacific and Indian Oceans, crossed the Atlantic, and sailed the Mediterranean, Red Sea, China Sea, Aegean Sea, Bosphorus and the Caribbean Sea. It has visited more than a hundred ports around the world, and welcomed visitors at each onto its decks.
Tickets can be booked in advance on the Nao Victoria Foundation website. Schools and associations can also schedule visits by emailing ecampos@velacuadra.es.
