About
Take a walk around Portsdown Hill with Countryside Officer Richard Jones, whose encyclopaedic knowledge of the area means he can usually identify most wildlife.
Spring got off to a wet start this year but the seasonal indicators put in a welcome appearance. Cowslips flowered in their usual abundance and swallows have now been seen. On the walk you can look out for butterflies characteristic of chalk grassland, such as various Blues and the Marbled White, as well as some orchids. Notably, the dazzling Adonis Blue was seen in the area last summer for the first time in decades due to careful long-term habitat management restoring the quality and biodiversity of the chalk grassland in this Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Meet at the East Gate of Fort Widley, and go prepared for the weather of the day! This walk is free to attend. Please note it is not accessible to buggies. There is limited parking at Fort Widley, and more space is available at the viewpoint across the road.
