About
Portsmouth Choral Union, with Southern Pro Musica and conductor David Gostick, perform favourite choruses, arias and ensembles from the world of grand opera!
In opera, the chorus serves as both a musical and dramatic element, often representing a group of people within the story and commenting on the action. They can be roles anything from soldiers to citizens or courtiers and beyond, and they enhance the emotional impact and musical texture of the opera. The chorus can also be used to represent the collective voice of a community, influencing and advancing the narrative. This concert includes some of the most famous choruses in operatic history.
The chorus in Verdi's 'Nebucco'(1842) perform the enduringly popular 'Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves'. The libretto was inspired by Psalm 137, and the powerful chorus helped to establish Verdi as a major composer in 19th century Italy.
Also by Verdi is the 'Triumphal Scene' from Aida. This chorus express the Egyptians' joy, as its army - with Ramades leading - returns victorious from battle. First performed in 1871, the story is a roller coaster of emotions told through Verdi's powerful music!
Another favourite is the 'March of the Toreadors' from Bizet's opera Carmen, written in 1875. It depicts the excitement and celebration surrounding the bullfight and describes the arrival of the fighters - with particular attention to Escamillo - and the enthusiastic cheers of the crowd. The chorus plays a key role in portraying the crowd's excitement and anticipation for the bullfight.
Also featured is the Polovtsian Dances, from Borodin's opera Prince Igor (1875), which are primarily known for their vibrant energy, exotic melodies, and their use as a captivating spectacle. The chorus plays a multifaceted role. They initially represent the Polovtsian slavewomen, expressing their longing for home and lamenting their captivity. Later, the chorus shifts to portraying the Polovtsian people, singing in praise of their Khan, Konchak. The chorus also provides a vibrant, rhythmic backdrop to the dances themselves.
To listen to many more famous Opera choruses, be sure to head to the David Russell Theatre at Portsmouth Grammar School at 7.30pm on Saturday 21 June for an awe-inspiring night of fantastic music.
And just as important – there is parking at the school!
