Went The Day Well? (1942, PG)
Adapted from a story by Graham Greene, Went the Day Well? depicts the greatest nightmare of the British public, that of secret German invasion. Released in 1942, produced by Ealing Studios and directed by Alberto Cavalcanti (who had experienced living under occupation in Europe), the film is unusually frank in its depiction of ruthlessness as a fictional village in southern England is taken over by German paratroopers.
With evocative music by William Walton, and a script full of suspense and surprises, Went the Day Well? features an ensemble cast of familiar faces; among them Thora Hird in her first significant role. In 2005 it was named among the ‘100 Greatest War Films’.

Famed for its authenticity, the script of ‘The Longest Day’ was adapted by war correspondent Cornelius Ryan from his book of the same name.
The film’s international ensemble cast features famous faces such as John Wayne, Sean Connery, Richard Burton, and Robert Mitchum. Many of the actors, including Henry Fonda, Eddie Albert, Leo Genn, and Rod Steiger, had seen action during the war. Richard Todd had participated in the assault on Pegasus Bridge and was among the first British officers to land in Normandy during Operation Overlord.
