COVID-19 has affected lives in so many ways and it's pushed communities to do extraordinary things to stay connected and to support one another during this difficult time. The dance community is no exception. Portsmouth Swing dancers (also called 'Lindy Hoppers') are harnessing that creativity to help on a global scale by running a 26-hour Zoom DJ event, starting 11:00 (BST) this Saturday. Not only will this bring swing dancers around the world together on a giant virtual dancefloor, but the event also aims to raise $4,000 to support the World Health Organization's COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
41 international Swing DJs, teachers and artists representing 29 countries from Canada to New Zealand will take to the stage to keep people moving (or listening) for 26 hours. Jazz music kept people sane throughout the Great Depression in the 30's and without a doubt it can help to save lives today.
The event is free and open to all - dancer or not. Participants are invited to donate, and their donations will give automatic entry to win raffle prizes like music vouchers, clothing and online classes with the world's top Swing dance teachers.
There are things in life that may only happen once. Lockdown is one of them, and so is the possibility to dance it off in this 26-hour swing dance marathon!
