About
The historic Fort Cumberland (a fortification dating from 1780 onwards, with two buildings from 1747) hosts a series of guided tours for Heritage Open Days 2024.
The tour will include the bastions and ramparts with their gun emplacements of various dates, and the magazines. Visitors will also see a small prison cell known as the Black Hole, the well-preserved High Angle Fire battery of 1890-4, and a mid-20th century cinema/theatre.
The tour includes steep ramps, uneven ground, unfenced drops requiring caution and rough vegetation including nettles and brambles. Access to the cinema/theatre is by means of an external staircase only.
The wearing of stout footwear and long trousers is advisable, and visitors are advised to dress for the weather as the majority of the tour will be outdoors.
Some areas are not wheelchair, pushchair or pram friendly.
Dogs are welcome on the tour but must be kept on a lead at all times as there are foxes and other wildlife on site. The tour will last approximately two hours.
