‘This is one of the best live bands you will ever see. If you’ve never seen them, you should correct that mistake!’ – Steve, The Cellars.
The band once described by Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson as ‘The loudest skiffle band in history’ are back!
The Gutter Brothers are best known in the UK for the soundtrack they provided for the Fools and Horses 1991 Christmas Special, ‘Miami Twice’ which included their unique cover of the Lovin’ Spoonful’s ‘Summer in the City’.
A Gutter Brothers gig is a joyous occasion – the infectious energy and enthusiasm of the band is guaranteed to get feet moving. Larger than life front man Tony Green with his whiskey-fags-and-gravel New Orleans drawl adds a swampy southern feel to the genre hopping style of the material, from rock to funk to country to blues
to ska, vividly animating the slice of life lyrics in every song. The Gutter Brothers were the first band to play live on MTV Europe in 1988 and toured the UK, Europe and the USA between 1988 and 1993 alongside bands such as Blondie, Jools Holland, Dr Feelgood, Steve Harley, Blue Rodeo, The Neville Brothers, Flowered Up and many more, gaining them cult status and a large and devoted fan base.
During this time they were signed by Elvis Costello’s Demon Records label and released two studio albums (Isometric Boogie 1988, Gone to the Dogs 1991) and one live album (Already Dead 1993). They also wrote soundtrack music for some mainstream TV series in addition to Fools and Horses: Gone to the Dogs (1991) starring Harry Enfield, Jim Broadbent and Alison Steadman and Boon Series 7 (1992) among others.
The band split up in 1993 but following the untimely death of tea chest bass player and lyricist Dennis Johnson in 2002 they reformed to perform a one-off memorial gig. The high level of interest prompted the band to continue performing on an occasional basis and they began writing new material using some of Den’s previously unpublished lyrics. This resulted in their third studio album ‘El Krusho’, released in 2008 and produced by Simple Minds producer Jez Coad.
Since 1993 the individual members of the band have been involved with various other projects: Guitarist Chris Cawte has worked on film soundtracks including 'Beavis and Butthead the Movie' and 'The Saint' and has played live with Rod Stewart, The Tremeloes and Genesis tribute G2. Bassist Steve Turner has played with Tenpole Tudor and currently plays for top European Led Zeppelin tribute Letz Zep. Drummer Jeff Walker has played for Daryl Hall and also plays in G2.
The Gutter Brothers are without doubt still one of the best live outfits around and their gigs remain the joyous occasions they always were.
