We are committed to making the service we provide more environmentally friendly. We already have a number of initiatives:
At Portsmouth Visitor Information Centre to contribute to reducing our carbon footprint and be as environmentally friendly as possible we:
* Encourage staff to ‘Think Green’ and welcome staff suggestions.
* Promote sustainable transport with themed cycle trails and new WalkIt website
* Provide information on cycle hire in Portsmouth and free hire of ‘D’ lock cycle locks.
* Promote paper and card recycling by swapping our external bins so that the recycling one is larger
* Recycle other items such as milk cartons, ink cartridges and batteries
* Source locally produced products for sale within the centres.
* Organise a regular beach clean up at The Hard.
* Use recycled products where available.
* Use energy saving light bulbs where possible
* Water saving devices installed at both Centres
* Always print on duplex (back to back) to save paper and only print when necessary
* Offer out of date brochures to schools first before sending for recycling
* When possible staff walk or cycle to work
Portsmouth can now be found on the urban walking route planner WalkIt. Get a route map between any two points, with information on your journey time, calorie burn, step count and carbon saving. It’s quick, free, healthy and green!
Beach clean at the HardOn a bright February afternoon, two of our staff donned wellies and took to the beach to pick up litter - returning with two full bags! Staff also found a dumped fridge freezer and arranged for its collection. In April, Visitor Information staff joined local Hotels and businesses for a special Clean City event, gathering 6 bags of litter from the beach at the Hard.
