General Sir Mike Jackson has served in Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Iraq with the British Army. In 2003, as Chief of the General Staff, Jackson ordered an inquiry into pictures printed in the Daily Mirror appearing to show British troops abusing Iraqi prisoners. The pictures were found to be a hoax and the paper's editor, Piers Morgan, resigned over the issue. General Jackson is well known for his efforts to improve the conditions and treatment of the armed forces.
