Portsmouth's Literary Connections

A number of famous authors have spent time in Portsmouth, the most notable perhaps being Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens. 

Others include Sir Walter Besant, Rudyard Kipling, George Meredith, Nevil Shute, H G Wells and current authors such as Betty Burton and Graham Hurley. You can find out more by joining one of the many guided walks or attending one of the talks led by the Portsmouth Tourism Guiding Service, literary subjects inlcude Charles Dickens Birthday and Christmas walks, Authors of Southsea, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Jane Austen.

The City of Portsmouth is both proud and delighted to have been chosen by Richard Lancelyn Green as the home for his extraordinary collection of Conan Doyle-related books, papers and assorted memorabilia. His bequest will mean that not only academics and specialists, but also the general public will be able to access Richard’s life’s work, once it has been catalogued and is available.
